A short survey will be used to prioritize workshop topics.
Session 2 | Roundtable: Building Community-Based Mental Health Support Systems and Harm Reduction Approaches to Substance Abuse
Annie Robinson & Angel Adeyoha, Campus Icarus organizers
Layla Ananda, former ICC Ann Arbor staff, Washtenaw Community College Psychology professor
kiran nigam, former NASCO staff and board member, Icarus Project
Join us for a workshop about approaches to, and issues in, mental health and substance abuse. Staff and managers play multiple roles when handling issues of mental health and substance abuse in co-ops--working to support members and communities while considering liability and legal obligations.
There are a lot of big questions on our minds regarding mental health and substance abuse, such as: What structures can we put in place to help prevent crisis situations from occurring, or minimize their potentially negative impact on the community when they do occur? What can we do for our members in times of extreme crisis to keep them from either getting locked up or hurting themselves? What can we do afterward to help everyone heal? How can we minimize feelings of alienation, anger, sadness, insecurity, etc...and create co-op communities that foster self-determination and support us all? What legal obligations must we consider as staff and managers?
We will introduce core concepts of mental health based upon self-determination and harm reduction. Furthermore, we will provide space for staff and managers to share their experiences with handling mental health and substance abuse issues, and will discuss incorporating self-determination and harm reduction strategies into co-op policies and practices.
