The Santa Barbara Student Housing Cooperative (SBSHC) is seeking applicants for the position of Member Services Coordinator (MSC) to be available beginning early September 2010 in Isla Vista, California.
About SBSHC
Founded in 1976, the SBSHC is a non-profit educational 501(c)(3) whose mission is to provide lower cost cooperative housing regardless of gender, race, social, political, or religious affiliation, and thereby influencing the elimination of prejudice and discrimination in the community. We strive to engage in continuous educational programs that further the principles of cooperation through mutual, self-help living at a minimal cost. SBSHC operates four properties in Isla Vista, serving seventy-five members.
Position Overview
The MSC works closely with and reports to the Executive Director in the cooperative’s central office. The position is offered as a forty hour, five days per week position. Various responsibilities to committees and special membership events necessitate a flexible schedule and some weekend and evening availability.
Administration
- Communications: Respond to Inquiries from Public & Members, Check Voicemail, Email, and Post, Report Weekly to Board and Staff
- Organization: Maintain Corporate Filing System
- Operations: Maintain Welcoming & Professional Office Environment, Stock Office Supplies & Maintain Equipment, Attend Staff In-Service Days
Education & Training
- Develop Educational Programs for Members
- Maintain Service Program, Serve on Committees
- Maintain Materials & Conduct Member Training
- Coordinate Monthly Fireside Chats, Update Houses with Event & Meeting Info, Motivate Creative Participation by Members
Membership Operations
- Conduct Annual & Perpetual Application Process
- Maintain Contracts & Conduct Signings
- Work with Membershipping Committee to Conduct Prospective Member Events & Assign spaces to new members
- Serve on Interim Cleaning Crew, Maintain Interim & Move-In/Move-Out Processes and Forms
- Conduct Conflict Transformations & Trainings
Outreach & Advertising
- Maintain Social Media Presence
- Advertise & Recruit on Annual Schedule
- Uphold campus organization relationships
- Keep Website Up to Date (Wiki Literate and/or Web Content Management Skills Necessary)
- Maintain Active Alumni Program
Accounts Receivable & Accounts Payable
- Generate Monthly Member Invoices (Knowledge Of or Willingness to Learn QuickBooks Required)
- Maintain Records of Security Deposits & Member Accounts (Proficiency with Excel Required)

Compensation & Benefits
This is a non-exempt salaried position of $14/hr. Wage increases will be assessed at least annually and based on cost of living adjustments and merit awards. Benefits include paid health insurance up to an annually budgeted amount, as well as discounted housing if staff lives within the cooperative community and other conditions are met.
The MSC will be granted eight paid holidays annually, one day of sick leave per month (that may accrue without limitation), and fifteen days of paid vacation annually. Vacation days may be taken once the employee has left
probationary status and may not interfere with the operations of the cooperative, in consideration of the unique alignment of organizational operations to the University of California academic calendar.
