General Job Description
Founded in 1933, the Berkeley Student Cooperative (BSC) is the largest student-governed nonprofit housing cooperative in the country, providing affordable housing to over 1,260 students. With tuition costs on the rise, the case for affordable, cooperative housing for college students has never been greater. The BSC seeks to hire a highly capable and inspirational development professional, with a proven track record of success in the areas of major gifts, events, and annual appeals, to lead a new and urgent charge to generate funds for housing scholarships. In addition, the position will support the Alumni Association's drive to win a $7 million capital campaign for critical seismic upgrades to the BSC's 20 residential properties surrounding the UC Berkeley campus. The successful candidate will motivate and coordinate the efforts of a dedicated and diverse group of Alumni Association leaders within a larger organizational culture that values student leadership and cooperative decision-making.
Specific Job Duties
- Fundraising. Direct the BSC and Alumni Association fundraising programs (in coordination with the Vice President of External Affairs) to help meet the capital and program income needs of both organizations, including:
- A planned $7 million capital campaign for building renovations.
- An annual giving plan, soliciting memberships and donations from BSC alumni.
- Foundation and corporate grants.
- Planned giving on the part of BSC alumni.
- Alumni Membership. Provide staff support to the Membership Committee of the Board of Directors of the Alumni Association in order to increase the number of BSC alumni who are active participants in and donors to the Alumni Association, including:
- Targeted activities to increase membership in the Alumni Association by graduating members and recent graduates of the BSC.
- Outreach to lapsed members of the Alumni Association.
- Regional events designed to increase networking among alumni in communities other than the San Francisco Bay Area.
- Regular membership renewal activities, including promoting alumni participation in lifetime membership and graduated membership levels.
- Signature Events. Develop an annual signature event to help promote and raise money for the BSC, while involving the alumni and the current membership and building sense of community and co-op pride.
- External Communications. Supervise and direct the Communications Coordinator's work to improve external communications and align external communications with the development goals of the organization, including:
- Developing the theme and content for alumni newsletters and alumni webpage updates.
- Disseminating regular, positive press releases about the activities of the BSC and the Alumni Association.
- Producing an annual report on the accomplishments and financial condition of the BSC and the support generated by the Alumni Association.
- Marketing and Internal Communications. Supervise and direct the work of the Communications Coordinator to develop marketing activities and bring proposals to the External Affairs Committee of the Board of Directors that will strengthen the BSC's marketing plan (for recruitment, retention and community awareness), including oversight of the Communications Coordinator in:
- Scheduling tours of BSC properties for prospective members.
- Sponsoring tables and presentations at events at a variety of higher education institutions in the San Francisco Bay Area.
- Communicating with new admittees, including incoming freshmen, re-entry students, and graduate students.
- Updating and improving the BSC webpage to increase awareness of the BSC activities by current and prospective members.
- Developing member newsletters, google.sites, wikipages, and other information-sharing strategies to increase awareness by BSC members of BSC issues and activities.
- Supervision of Others. Supervise the Alumni Coordinator and Communications Coordinator.
- Board Relationships. Attend meetings of the BSC and Alumni Association boards on a regular basis and BSC Alumni Association committee meetings as needed.
- Information Technology. Provide recommendations and input so that the organization has a donor and alumni database sufficient to meet its fundraising and alumni relations needs.
- Other duties assigned by the BSC Executive Director.
Required Qualifications
- College degree or equivalent.
- At least three years of comparable experience and demonstrated success in implementing marketing, capital campaigns, and fundraising programs.
- Substantial experience in raising funds for non-profit organizations, ideally for a mid- to large-size non-profit.
- Demonstrated knowledge in identifying, cultivating and personally soliciting large grants and donations.
- Ability to coordinate multiple projects with attention to detail. This includes past experience creating workplans, periodic reports, evaluations, budgeting, record keeping, and written and oral presentations.
- Experience (and enjoyment) in managing and working with people.
- Familiarity/experience with both general database systems, as well as specialized fundraising software and desktop publishing software (lnDesign, PageMaker)
- Commitment to the ideals of cooperation.
- Experience supervising marketing and communications work.
Preferred Qualifications
- Coursework at or above the undergraduate level in business administration, non-profit management or other relevant fields.
- Experience working closely with Boards of Directors.
- Experience working with alumni groups.
- Experience living in and/or working with cooperatives.
Compensation
This is a full time exempt position, with a starting salary range of $54,030 - $76,012 with the potential for merit increases and/or bonuses and an annual cost-of-living adjustment.
