Salary

$10.00 an hour for up to 15 hours per week, or up to $3,000 per academic year ($1,500 per semester); travel and materials covered, and additional $250 and housing and travel for one week training. We are also willing to provide college credit plus travel expenses for training in lieu of a salary.

Job Description

The Responsible Endowments Coalition (REC) is hiring student organizers to work on community investment campaigns. Are you a college student and organizer excited a about social and environmental justice, and want to work on a major campaign? REC is organizing a community investment campaign to get universities to put their money in smaller community-focused banks and credit unions. Time will be divided between national campaign work and campus organizing. If you don't know much about community investment, that's okay - as long as you love social justice, have some experience in organizing and/or activism, and have strong leadership skills.

In the 2010-2011 school year, REC will launch a national campaign to push colleges and universities to move their money from big banks to community-based institutions We work in partnership with the Huffington Post's Move Your Money Initiative, which encourages individuals to make a statement against big banks for social, environmental, and fiscal responsibility by moving their money from big banks to local credit unions. Colleges and universities are major institutional investors, and there is real possibility for positive social change from below.

Organizers will work with the REC National Organizer, a network of allies, and their own local community (campus, media, administration, surrounding areas, etc.) to develop campaign strategies, draft press releases, create materials on a national level, and engage with their own communities on a local level. In the past, REC's student organizers have run campus campaigns on issues ranging from transparency and proxy voting to divestment, and our national community investment campaign and can and will be tied to many existing campaigns.

Organizers are based around the country and do not operate from the central office, thus self-motivation and strong-time management skills are essential. Experience with Microsoft Office is a must and knowledge of internet research and social networking sites is a plus.

Responsibilities include

• Attending a 1 week paid training in New York City in late summer 2010
• Serving as a spokesperson and advocate for community development issues on your campus and in your community
• Drafting press releases, writing op-eds, and other independent as well as integrated communications work
• Leading a delegation from your campus or region to our national conference in NYC on Columbus Day weekend
• Assisting in developing and implementing national campaign strategy
• Serving as liaison between new contacts and full-time staff
• Engaging with students, administrators, the media, and your local community
• Participating in monthly conference calls with REC staff and other organizers, helping to shape overall organizational policy
• Providing weekly progress reports and time sheets to the National Organizer
• Posting an entry each month to the REC blog
• Serving on the student and alumni steering committee (optional)

Additional Qualifications

Ideal candidates would have some campus or community organizing experience, and would be strong public speakers comfortable working with diverse audience. Any and all students excited about becoming part of a national movement to support our communities and move our schools and our money out of the big banks are welcome to apply!
