NASCO Institute is just around the corner, and workshop descriptions, the Institute schedule, and registration are all live on the NASCO website [0].  This year, registration will close one week prior to Institute, on October 28--so don't forget to register!  Register early--before October 5--and save $50 on registration fees.  You can also find information on how to apply for Institute scholarships [0] on our website.

Worker Co-ops Gather in Baltimore by Steve Dubb

Roughly 200 worker co-op members gathered from across the eastern half of the country in Baltimore, Maryland this July for the Eastern Conference on Workplace Democracy. The conference, organized by former NASCO staff members Neily Jennings and Esteban Kelly, attracted record attendance. Workshop sessions were wide-ranging ... and so were the co-ops represented-from the Sí Se Puede housecleaning co-op in the Bronx to Equal Exchange (based in Massachusetts) to new co-ops organizing in New Orleans, Louisiana to the long-standing Isthmus Engineering Co-op in Madison, Wisconsin. Decontructing Ableism: Dis(Abilty) and Shared Housing by Emma Rubin
[0]On July 17, 2011, kiran nigam, core member of the Anti-Oppression Resource and Training Alliance (AORTA [1]) and former NASCO Director of Education and Training, facilitated a day-long workshop on "Deconstructing Ableism: (Dis)ability and Shared Housing." The workshop was organized by Nicki Hurley, accessibility specialist for Kalamazoo Collective Housing [2], presented by Kalamazoo Collective Housing, and sponsored by Western Michigan University Disability Services for Students [3] and the Western Michigan University Division of Multicultural Affairs [4]. Attendees represented local disability rights, co-op, and LGBT organizations. Read more

Active Member Spotlight: Solar Community Housing Association by Justin Ellerby [4]

In 1979, co-opers from the Domes, a 28-member cohousing community located on the campus of UC Davis, were among the founders of the first Solar Community Housing Association co-op.  Three decades and two additional member-houses later, the circle has turned, as SCHA is pursuing an agreement with UC Davis to assume management of the Domes.  Members of the latter community were recently issued a notice to leave the property, and its unique buildings had even been under threat of demolition.  However, relationships forged between various campus agencies and SCHA over the last year have helped stay their destruction, and may provide for a lease of the elder co-op by its offspring.
