Brick & Mortar Collective House Warming!

Donation protected
The Brick and Mortar Collective is a group equity housing co-operative comprised of young artists, activists, educators, students,  and community builders. The Brick and Mortar Collective members currently reside in a rental house on Detroit’s North end, but in 2015  purchased a 7,000 sq ft duplex on Detroit’s East Side. We have been renovating that house since then, while living together in a rental house on the North End.  As a collective, we provide sustainable and affordable low cost of living to members who own a share of the co-operative as member-owners. We operate through social justice, artistic, and community building values and participate in activities that promote these values within and outside our home.

Brick and Mortar has been working for 5 years to renovate our collectively owned home, and we estimates that we are just $12,000 away from installing the heating system into the house - this is the LAST big cost standing between us and being able to live in this house! Together, we have repaired and replaced hardwood flooring, broken windows, weak joists, rotten beams, crumbling bricks and mortar, broken plaster walls, and so much more. We have fundraised in order to hire contractors to repair damage to the roof, the foundation, and to install new electrical and plumbing. We plan to move into the house in August of 2019, but we need to raise this $12,000 to get a heating system into our home before winter sets in.

Not only will your donation help to heat our home, but it will make our space more welcoming as we try to build community here. We plan to use our 2nd living room as a community space, to be reservable for community groups that need a space to meet, for childcare,  emergency housing, potlucks, film screens, and whatever else our community can think of! We have a desktop computer and small library that will be available for community members to use as well. We also intend to use a large portion of our basement as workshop space!

We are aspiring feminist, anti-racist, and anti-capitalist organizations. We work to manifest these values in our standing rules, application procedure, meeting structure and organizational culture. We do not simply want to live affordably in Detroit, we want to be part of the process of collaboration, resistance and  building meaningful, impactful connections in the city.

We value art, education,  sustainability and solidarity. Group discussions on politics are commonplace and we seek to push ourselves and encourage one another to be better people everyday. We aim for our spaces to not only house members, but also community meeting spaces, small scale libraries, computer services, workshop stations and more!
