Save BIPOC-centered Cooperative Housing

Newton House has provided an affordable and affirming home for Queer, Trans, Black Indigenous People of Color (QTBIPOC) since 2008. Over the years residents have created a community based in collective decision-making and mutual aid. This is a home that is able to empower and create space that centers QTBIPOC and enables those residents to engage in direct democracy and cooperation, while practicing community care.

With the COVID-19 pandemic the co-op is in danger of losing the house to foreclosure. The residents, who are majority BIPOC, face impending displacement, due to COVID-related income loss. The current collective is seeking community assistance to help preserve this house for current and future BIPOC residents. This house is part of the Bay Area Community Land Trust and will remain as community land into perpetuity.

Your donation helps preserve an already existing low-income housing project, keep the housing off the market, and provide low income housing for QTBIPOC and their allies fostering a world without landlords and cultivating sustainable and respectful land stewardship on Ohlone land.

Breakdown of fundraising goals:

Mortgage owed: $25,500
Property Tax: $ 11,300
Resiliency fund for resident-members of the land trust in financial crisis: $33,000

Your donations are tax deductible. 100%  funds raised go straight to covering mortgage and property taxes for our residents.

BACLT advances housing as a human right by creating permanently affordable, resident-controlled housing cooperatives. BACLT combats inequitable housing outcomes by acquiring, converting, and preserving unsubsidized affordable rental housing in low-income neighborhoods facing displacement. Through grassroots partnerships, BACLT also revives vacant buildings that are under-utilized, offers interactive training on cooperative property management and democratic governance, and supports the intersectional housing justice efforts of tenant rights, faith, and community organizations. BACLT is governed by its low-income residents and members whose wisdom and experience direct our work for a more equitable, sustainable, and community-controlled future.
