Leveraging Cooperative Housing Assets for Future Generations Webinar

Housing cooperatives have a unique ability to leverage their assets for the benefit of current and future members and their communities. Join us to hear about a variety of cooperative models from Canada, Germany and the USA that manage assets to increase access to cooperative housing. Our goal is to share examples of how co-op asset management is a tool to effect social change, a value built into a co-op’s mission statement.

Panelists:

Daniel Miller- Director of Properties, NASCO (USA/Canada)

Daniel Miller has worked with coops at various stages of development as a volunteer, board member, and staff member. Daniel (he/him) now serves as the Director for NASCO Properties. As liaison to the board, he works to coordinate maintenance, governance, and budgeting for co-ops in the NASCO Properties system. Daniel also supports co-ops in responding to crises, long-term planning, and technical support.

Tiffany Duzzita – Executive Director, Community Land Trust (Vancouver, Canada)

Tiffany leads the Community Land Trust in her position as the Executive Director for Community Land Trust in Vancouver, Canada. She is responsible for operations and execution of the strategic direction and growth plans of the organization.

Jens-Uwe Köhler – CFO, Studentendorf(Berlin)

In the late 90s,Jens became engaged in student organizations when he was studying German literature at the Free University in Berlin. Jens campaigned against the demolition of the Studentendorf, the student village in Berlin. In 2002 he was involved in founding the co-op and was a member of the managing board. Together they saved the village by buying it from the city of Berlin. Since 2004 Jens is the CFO of the “Studentendorf Schlachtensee eG” in Berlin.

Brel Hutton-Okpalaeke – Director of Development Services, NASCO (USA/Canada)

Brel (they/he/him) began their co-op journey in 2014 in Madison, Wisconsin as a member of Madison Community Cooperative, Madison Area Cooperative Housing Alliance, and the United People of Color Caucus. Brel sees cooperatives as one of the best ways to affect social change and actively fight gentrification and extractive economic practices.  

Liz Anderson – Director of Education NASCO (USA/Canada)

Liz (she/her/they/them) was first introduced to cooperatives as a worker-owner at Rose City Coffee Co-operative at Earlham College. They majored in Business and Nonprofit Management with a minor in Women’s, Gender and Sexuality studies. Before working at NASCO, Liz’s time working with the U.S. Federation of Worker Cooperatives spurred their dedication to grassroots movement-building in the cooperative sector.
