College Houses is a nonprofit student housing cooperative in Austin, Texas, managed by its student members. Formed in 1964, College Houses’ mission is to provide affordable housing to foster community, support education, and promote the personal development and well-being of our members. Located in the West Campus neighborhood near the University of Texas, College Houses’ 7 cooperatives are home to over 500 members.

The Executive Director is the Chief Executive Officer of College Houses and responsible to the Board of Directors for the management and implementation of the daily operations of the organization, utilizing both physical and financial resources, providing leadership, oversight and planning for all functional areas of the organization. The ED is the Registered Agent of College Houses and serves as an advisor to the co-op members who govern each of the houses.

Primary Responsibilities:

Leadership & Management

  • Serve the organization and the board of directors with a passion to lead staff, volunteers and students to success
  • Maintain compliance with Board policies and government standards
  • Identify needs and coordinate the training of staff, board, and committees to maximize mission impact and technical proficiency
  • Ensure high quality, effective operations and programs
  • Evaluate programs and recommend modifications and improvements
  • Hire, release, supervise, and evaluate all staff
  • Coordinate and monitor negotiations, conflict management, problem solving and resolution processes

Financial & Planning

  • Analyze and assess financial documents including financial statements, audits, budget processes, loan values, property management, bond setup and loan swap
  • Monitor and report on the house maintenance and capital improvement needs of College Houses and on the operation of each house
  • Ensure that all items related to facilities operations such as permits and licenses, contracts, soliciting bids and cost related to work are on time, within budget and communicated to all stakeholders
  • Oversee preparation and implementation of annual budget
  • Lead strategic planning
  • Work closely with Board, volunteers, staff and house committees on fundraising opportunities, special events, and income diversification


  • Ensure the continuous and valid flow of information between staff, members, volunteers, the public, and College Houses
  • Cooperate and regularly communicate with Board, staff, volunteers, committee members, constituents, community, and national stakeholders to promote understanding and acceptance
  • Serve as the spokesperson for College Houses
  • Maintain positive relationships with community leaders
  • Maintain corporate information ensuring that information is current, easily accessible and communicated


  • Help create and maintain a welcoming and professional atmosphere for applicants, members, staff, and the public
  • Treat everyone in a professional, respectful, and friendly manner
  • Work as part of a team of professionals supporting co-op members and facilitating the success of the organization
  • Other duties as assigned

Working Conditions

  • Will work around standard office conditions
  • May spend extended periods of time at a desk working at a computer
  • Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation
  • This position is expected to work at least 40 hours each week, and be in the office from 10 am – 6 pm, Monday through Friday.
  • This position requires the ability to perform tasks that involve bending, lifting, walking, carrying and using force equal to lifting up to 50 pounds, with or without accommodations. Any lifts over 50 lbs. may only be performed as team lifts with supervisor’s approval

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree preferred, Bachelor’s degree required
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work evenings and flexible hours


College Houses offers a competitive benefits package including full medical and dental insurance, a retirement plan, paid vacation, sick leave, and holidays. The starting salary range for this position is between $95,000 - $115,000 and will be commensurate with experience and education.
