Hours/status: Fulltime; Salaried-exempt, $80,000 annual salary
The Narrative Finance Director is responsible for budget preparation, liaising with auditors, and preparing financial reports for the board. Our non-profit is governed by a board elected from and by our student residents, and the Narrative Finance Director would also be responsible for making the organization’s finances accessible to our member-owners and connecting financial statements to our mission. This position will work closely with the Accounting Director on financial issues and Executive Director on budgets and other issues.

- Compile an annual analysis of competitive market housing rates with recommendations for room rate structures.

- Research, prepare and submit grant/funding requests that support the strategic initiatives of College Houses
- City and County Funding and Partnership Opportunities
- Non-profit and Educational Institution Funding and Partnership Opportunities
- Recruit donors and steward donor relationships (including alumni)
- Cooperative Storytelling
- Strategic Planning - with a focus on using financial information to support a greater understanding of the co-op’s needs and potential
- Engage with staff at peer cooperatives and cooperative associations beyond Austin to gather best practices including budgeting, financial reporting, and narratives about the benefits and impact of cooperatives
- Create and maintain reports to measure the economic impact of College Houses on co-op members
- Work with members paired to the position through office hours
- Coordinate with Executive Director to
- create an annual Fund Development Plan
- update budgeting and financial reporting materials in order to make them more accessible and helpful to members
- Maintain & Review General Ledger
- Maintain general ledger accounts new and existing
- Review entries monthly to verify coding'
- Reconcile bank statements monthly
- Reconcile other balance sheet accounts monthly
- Budgets
- Staff liaison to the Finance Committee, attends meetings and ensures minutes are kept
- Support finance committee in preparing yearly budgets and 5 year projections
- Support with a focus on participatory, visual, and narrative budgeting
- Maintain budget spreadsheet
- Maintain budget in accounting software
- Compare budget vs actual monthly
- Financial Statements
- Prepare, review & distribute monthly financials statements
- Monitor financial status of company and review with either Co-op Treasurer or Board of Directors
- Maintain a monthly dashboard of financial information for members and staff
- Answer questions from members about variance reports & house P&L
- Prepare schedules & proforma’s as needed
- Maintain capital improvement & contingency expense records
- File Monthly/Quarterly/Yearly Reports to Reporting Agencies
- File payroll quarterly & yearly reports and pay taxes not paid monthly
- Prepare & distribute W-2’s & 1099’s yearly
- File monthly/quarterly/yearly government surveys
- Pay and record bi-monthly 403B payments
- Prepare & file hotel and sales tax reports and pay taxes
- Audit/990/990-T
- Manage yearly independent audit
- Prepare schedules for audit
- Work with auditors to answer questions and collect information
- Review audit report & tax returns
- Maintain fixed asset spreadsheet/software
