Brief Description of Organization: 

The Santa Barbara Student Housing Cooperative (SBSHC) provides low-rent cooperative housing to students, staff, and faculty of the University of California at Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara City College, and other area institutions of higher education. SBSHC is open to members regardless of gender, race, social, political, or religious affiliation and works to influence the community to eliminate prejudice and discrimination. We strive to engage in continuous educational programs that further the principles of cooperation through mutual, self-help living at a minimal cost.

Position Title: 
SBSHC Member Resource Development Intern
Position Duties: 

This summer the Santa Barbara Student Housing Cooperative is seeking enthusiastic applicants interested in learning new skills and creating lasting impacts for cooperative communities. An interest in living by the beach and nurturing healthy countercultures is required for this position!  This internship will involve working with SBSHC members and staff to develop a variety of resources for future co-op members. Your efforts will aid hundreds of SBSHC members in living their best co-op lives for years to come! Depending on your individual skills and preferences, projects may include:

  • Developing educational modules and trainings for House Officers and other member Service Positions

  • Creating posters and infographics related to co-op living 

  • Creating a web-based portal for SBSHC members to access co-op information and other resources

  • Assisting in developing SBSHC’s Alumni Program and newsletter

  • Working with the SBSHC Policy Working Group to implement policy improvements

  • Collaborating with individual houses on space beautification projects

  • Standardizing SBSHC materials with updated logos and branding

  • If skills match, creating outreach and educational resources in Spanish

  • Assisting with other office and board of directors projects as needed

Position Training: 

 

As the SBSHC Member Resource Development Intern, you will receive a personal orientation from staff and officers about SBSHC, our co-op’s history, and Isla Vista, as well as ongoing support from staff about current co-op operations and internship goals. You will also have the opportunity to gain leadership experience by coordinating interested members to assist with internship projects. Over the course of the internship you will further the development of your own project management, resource development, and general professional skills.

Skills Development & Learning: 
  • Advanced understanding about co-op history and operations

  • Skills in time and project management, educational resource development, and other dimensions of cooperative housing related to your specific project goals

Other details of working conditions: 
You will be working in a shared office with your own work space. Ideally applicants will be able to bring their own laptop to work on projects.

$300 monthly stipend
