The Interfaith Community for Detained Immigrants (ICDI) is a nonprofit that serves people who are caught in the broken immigration system of the U.S. ICDI was founded by Sr. Joanne Persch and Sr. Pat Murphy of the Sisters of Mercy and started out as a prayer ministry for people being deported. Out of this ministry grew several other programs, including jail visitation, court watch, children's ministry, a post-detention hotline, and a hospitality house. Now ICDI is opening a housing cooperative for people who are ready to leave the hospitality house but want to remain a part of the community of fellow immigrants and citizen supporters that they have discovered on their journey. The goal of this housing program is to encourage each person's sense of independence and self-determination, while also promoting a sense of mutual care and community support. ICDI's housing cooperative draws on the long tradition of community housing in immigration, most notably Jane Addams' Hull House here in Chicago, to open up the best of America to its immigrants and to learn from immigrants' own resources, particularly when it comes to a strong and living sense of faith.
