Welcoming New NASCO Member Co-ops

 
Please join us in welcoming Ku'umba Collective and Riveredge Housing Cooperative as new NASCO Member Co-ops!
Ku'umba Collective is an arts housing collective that started in early 2020. The purpose of the co-op is to build an affordable space that encourages the overall well-being and growth of black queer people in Detroit. Ku'umba Collective's mission is to provide an affordable living arts space that encourages growth and positive socialization centering the experiences of black queer people.
Riveredge Housing Cooperative is located in Milawukee, WI. The co-op's purpose is to return home ownership to the People. Riveredge Housing Cooperative members work together to maintain the quality of their existing housing, to expand the number of available housing units, to live together cooperatively on an ongoing and meaningful basis, to enrich each other's lives, and to participate in preserving and improving their community.
 
And please join us in welcoming Berkeley Student Cooperative (BSC) and Campus Cooperative Residence Inc. (CCRI) back as NASCO Members Co-ops! 
Berkeley Student Cooperative provides affordable housing and board to students at UC Berkeley and other Bay Area colleges and universities. Presently the BSC has over 1300 student members living in or eating at their seventeen houses and three apartment cooperatives around the UC Berkeley campus. Founded in 1933, the BSC is the largest student housing cooperative in the United States.
CCRI was formed in 1936 in Toronto. Their mission is to be a thriving, vibrant, and diverse co-operative student community in which members live affordably, learn, experience personal growth, build relationships, and contribute to the co-operative. They provide student housing in Toronto founded on the principles of equity, mutual aid, democracy and co-operation.

ICA Youth Leadership Exchange

Applications are open for the Youth Leadership Exchange Program, a 10-day learning journey that will have two pilot editions in 2023, one in Spain and one in the US. The ICA Youth Executive Committee is looking for folks under the age of 35 that belong to the movement and are generally aware of and interested in the cooperative movement to join. Learn more and apply by January 31.

We've got our eyes on "Freedomland" by Oberlin College history professor Annemarie Sammartino, published in April 2022. "Freedomland" tells the story of Co-op City, the largest housing cooperative in the US.

The book traces the history of Co-op City through planning and development, including a major rent strike and the assertion of community control in the mid-70s, and what Co-op City can teach us about creating equitable affordable housing.

Real Estate for Radicals is case study based research on affordable community-owned housing -- co-ops, community land trusts, communes, and squats and their potential to advance housing as a human right. By studying 5 communities and their residents, presenter Erin Graves will consider the extent to which these urban housing communities advance the principles of equality, liberation, and justice for the residents and the larger community.

College Conference on Cooperatives
February 16-19 | Minneapolis, MN

Over the course of this 3-day conference, participants will hear from experts in the field, participate in interactive learning activities and workshops, and tour co-ops in the Twin Cities. The event attracts students from across the country and is beneficial to those new to co-ops as well as those with some previous co-op education.

Solidarity Economy Principles Community of Practice Gathering

Wanted an easy way to connect with peers about common but difficult challenges in building solidarity economies? Yearned for greater cooperation and less competition among peers building solidarity economy movements?

You are not alone! Join the Solidarity Economy Principles Community of Practice (SEP) for an online Zoom gathering of leaders whose organizations have committed to upholding the Solidarity Economy Principles and Practices at solidarityeconomyprinciples.org. Spanish/English interpretation available.
