Co-op Details
Ku'umba Collective is an arts housing collective that started in early 2020. The purpose of our co-op was to build an affordable space that encourages the overall well being and growth of black queer people in Detroit. We share and are working to incorporate the same seven principles of co operatives including the Cooperative Principles of:
1. Open and Voluntary Membership
2. Democratic Member Control
3. Members’ Economic Participation
4. Autonomy and Independence
5. Education, Training, and Information
6. Cooperation Among Cooperatives
7. Concern for Community.
As we build structure , we hope to integrate principles regarding afro-centrism, intersectional womanism, queer liberation and other generally good ( such as respect, open communication etc) values to guide the way we socialize, maintain our home and integrity. We aspire to provide affordability, helpful resources to members and a supportive community of people that helps each other grow and move through challenges. We encourage self expression through artistic means to inspire one's best self which adds to a making a better community and society.
Ku'umba Collective's mission is to provide an affordable living arts space that encourages growth and positive socialization centering the experiences of black queer people.
