The Health of Our Sector

Last month, NASCO released a report compiling the results of our 2021 member co-op health assessments.

The goal of this report is to document and share best practices among different group equity housing cooperatives, suggest goals to member co-ops that are not yet commonly adopted but which are emerging practices in member cooperatives, and offer member co-ops a long-term outside view of their own growth.

Members Corner

NASCO is currently scheduling health assessments with all member co-ops!

Health Assessments are one of the benefits of NASCO membership. It offers a chance to reflect on your co-op’s health, check in on what’s going well, and determine what needs work. NASCO will prepare a health assessment report for your co-op, including guidance and resources based on our conversation. Information gathered from your assessment will also be included in our sector-wide reporting (see above).

If you haven't yet heard from NASCO staff via email about scheduling your health assessment, please email us at staff@nasco.coop.

Co-op Snapshots

Halstead Co-op’s official and unique membership portrait from 2020:

"This portrait represents the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, masking, stay-at-home mandates, remote learning as well as more internal challenges such as extremely-low membership occupancy, budget cuts and labor shortages. But nonetheless, the membership of 2020-2021 thrived and their sense of community strengthened."

National Fair Housing Month

April is Fair Housing Month in the U.S.! This year marks the 54th anniversary of the Fair Housing Act which works to make discrimination in housing transactions unlawful. The Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination in housing because of race, color, national origin, religion, sex (including gender identity and sexual orientation), disability, and familial status.

As housing providers, co-ops and their members should be educated on Fair Housing law at the federal, state, and local levels. Haven't had Fair Housing training at your co-op this year? NASCO can help! Request a Fair Housing training here.

Rosewood Housing Co-op is a non-hierarchical, fair housing co-op founded on the principles of sustainability, creativity, and affordability. Rosewood has saved enough money to secure a lease on their 2nd home in Central East Austin, Texas, but it will deplete their savings and leave their community in a risky position. They are asking for donations to help fund the upfront costs and to ensure financial security.
