California Cooperatives Conference

Date:
Friday, May 1, 2015 to Saturday, May 2, 2015
"Join us for the California Co-op Conference on May 1 & 2 in Sacramento and a tour of local Co-ops on April 30! We’ll celebrate cooperatives by sharing successes and provide you with the most effective ways you can help strengthen and expand the cooperative movement!

Workshops will reveal how cooperatives revitalize and fortify local economies by creating jobs, housing, and locally owned businesses. You will learn how to start a new cooperative, how to develop and how to strengthen your own cooperatives. The conference offers you an opportunity to engage with other cooperators and discuss ideas, experiences, and strategies. Conference attendees will receive a discounted rate for the Co-op Tour.

CCCD is pleased to welcome Jessica Gordon Nembhard to Sacramento as the keynote speaker. Gordon Nembhard is a political economist and Associate Professor of Community Justice and Social Economic Development in the Africana Studies Department at John Jay College, City University of NY. Her recent book Collective Courage: A History of African American Cooperative Economic Thought and Practice chronicles African American cooperative business ownership and its place in the movements for Black civil rights and economic equality. “I started this research 15 years ago because I was interested in community economic development strategies, especially for marginalized groups and women—not necessarily because I wanted only to focus on African-Americans... But in the African-American example, too, people today can see how a group so denigrated economically and politically and left out of the system, came together. They pooled meager resources, doubled or in some cases tripled their influence, shared both the risk and the profits and gave each other a voice and a chance to get ahead.” (Gordon Nembhard, Colorlines)
