Brief Description of Organization: 

The mission of the Students’ Co-operative, Inc. is to promote the social and general welfare of the community by offering affordable, cooperatively-owned housing to all students, regardless of race, color, creed, religion, national origin, sex, marital status, disability, public assistance, sexual orientation, gender identity, or familial status and thus influence the community to eliminate prejudice and discrimination in housing; and to initiate, coordinate, and otherwise participate in educational efforts and programs for the education of its members and others in the philosophy, principles, and practices of cooperatives.

Our organization offers co-operative housing at its 1721 University Avenue SE location in Minneapolis, MN, and a meal plan for its members.

Internship Position Title: 
Finance Intern
Internship Position Duties: 

- Work alongside the Students' Co-operative's finance committee, treasurer, financial manager, and members to develop a budget. The ideal intern should have experience with financial management and budgeting at other co-operative enterprises. Alternatively, experience with financial management and budgeting in other non-profit or for-profit contexts is acceptable. 
- Work with the Students' Co-operative's treasurer and financial manager to maintain and improve effective accounting practices. 
- Advise the Students' Co-operative's members and board on developing effective co-operative culture and governance. The intern should previously have lived at a housing co-op. 

Internship dates: Start & end dates are flexible (May 1-August 31)

 

Position Training: 

- The intern is expected to have financial experience and experience living in a housing co-op. 
- Training on the Students' Co-operative's current accounting and financial practices will be provided by our officers.

Skills Development & Learning: 

The intern will gain experience in the following areas: 
- non-profit governance
- non-profit co-operative financial management and budgeting
- non-profit accounting
